Palm Tree Perils is reporting that the government of Nigeria is finally taking steps to eradicate the Nypa palm (Nypa fruticans), a weedy tree that threatens the delicate mangrove ecosystems in several parts of Western Africa. Nypa palms, native to Asia and northern Australia, were introduced to Nigeria in the early 1900's, most likely to control soil erosion on the coast.
