"Budding Awareness"

Currently making the newspaper rounds is this Knight Ridder article about invasive species. The article mentions a few of the "big baddies" and discusses the increase in public awareness about invasives over the past few years. A well-written and researched article but they lose points for succumbing to the allure of the phrase "wreaking havoc" :-).

They should also lose points for confusing the emerald ash borer and sudden oak death. And how about for referring to the brown tree snake as an "unsightly summer garden visitor," notwithstanding the fact that it has yet to be established in the U.S.?

That's funny, the first time I read it my brain made peace with that ash borer/SOD sentence as just being about two different invaders. I'm going to chock that one up to a proofreading error following editing for space.

For missing the ridiculous brown tree snake ref, I can offer no excuses, only apologies. Minus quadruple bonus points!!!

But I still like the part of the article that talks about public awareness.
