Mass Mussel Mania

Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have been found for the first time in the state of Massachusetts. The mussels were found by an alert citizen swimming in Laurel Lake in the town of Lee, located in the western part of the state.

Zebra mussels are actually beneficial to ecosystems in which they are introduced. Their only fault is that they tend to clog up humans' pumping equipment and turbines in dams. Yet they claim to be environmentalists! I think that these scare tactics are simply used to ensure job security for environmental managers. We are told that nature can't manage itself and that humans' (dispersal of organisms) is wholly unnatural. Homeostasis does not happen at the ecosystem level!

Response to Anonymous: Much of what you say about zebra mussels cleaning water is ture, but on't the zebra mussels also compete with native mollusks? Just wondering what your thoughts are about eliminating native species with non-native species.
