Too Soon!

Weekend Photoblogging

Too Soon!

While walking the converted rail trail along the Neponset River in Dorchester, MA, I was surprised to see a cane of multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) already leafing out. I guess it got some mixed signals from the warm weather in January. The buds looked fine, even after last weekend's snow and ice, so something tells me it will take more than our typical February winter weather to kill this plant.

I did not realize the warm weahter had reached to true Yankee territory. In Houston we have had the year without a winter. Monarchs have laid eggs all through December, January and February on ASCLEPIAS CURASSAVICA; some cherry trees bloomed before Christmas, with the remaider soon to follow in January; I counted three spicebush swallowtails in a local park while walking this morning; and some zinnias in my buterfly garden, although scraggly, have never ceased blooming.
