Weekend Photoblogging

Dirty Tricks

Today we have a nice demo of the power of invasive ivy (Hedera sp.). Anita cleared a spot in her backyard and sowed some native wildflower seed, but the allelopathy of the ivy has forced a buffer zone of a foot or two where very little can grow.

I'd never heard of this. I'm glad that the first task I set myself to when we bought our house two years ago was to eliminate all the English Ivy on the property. That and several other pestilential plants.

It's down to one small patch now, and that will be gone by the end of the summer, shredded and composed. At least it's good for something.
