The Chinese government is putting almost $18 million USD towards developing the research center, which will study pathogens, invasive species and genetically engineered organisms. The center will also act as ta clearinghouse for species data, collecting samples and information from across China, and identifying and reporting about potential new harmful species before they become widespread.
